MIRACLE OF EIGHT DAYS mirrors the ancient story of Hanukkah in the Jewish tradition. It is comprised
of three well-known themes; “Maoz Tsur” (Rock of Ages), the traditional blessing over the Hanukkah candles, and “Mi Yimalel” (Who Can Retell). These three themes are played twice. During the first half of the piece, they are played in a minor mode, and are barely recognizable. During the second half, the themes are repeated in a major mode, and are easily recognized. This piece is also available as chamber music, for piano, clarinet, violin and cello.
This piece is dedicated to Dr. Cheryl Newton, band director at Oakton High School, Fairfax County, Virginia. Not only did she direct the premiere of this music, but she was a music instructor and guiding light to the composer’s daughters.
